replace와 substitute

정말 많이 외웠던 문구다. 그런데 다음도 가능하다는 사실!

substitute A with B

replace와 substitute 단어 본래의 뜻을 생각하면 더 자연스럽게 이해할 수 있다.

 

1. replace

replace A는 'A의 위치를 바꾼다(re-place)'는 뜻에서 'A를 교체한다', 'A를 제거한다(remove)'는 뜻으로 확장되어 사용되는 타동사이다. 그러니까 우리말의 '~를 대체하다', '~를 바꾸다'라는 의미와 더 잘 들어맞는다.

I replaced the cup carefully in the saucer.
컵을 컵받침 위에 조심스럽게 다시 놓았지. 
You should replace the broken keyboards.
깨진 키보드는 교환해야 되겠네요.
Hostility was replaced by love.
적의가 사랑으로 바뀌었다.

2. substitute

substitute는 '대용품[sub(아래) + stitute(놓임)]'이라는 뜻에서 '대신하다', '대리하다'라는 자동사로 발전한 단어이다.

Money substitutes 화폐 대체물
There's no substitute for parents. 부모를 대신할 사람은 없어.
I'll substitute for him. 제가 그 사람을 대신하겠습니다.

타동사로 사용될 때 substitute는 두 가지 뜻 다 쓰인다. substitute B for A는 'A대신 B를 대용품으로 사용한다'는 뜻이지만 substitute A with B는 'A를 B로 대체한다'는 뜻이다. 후자는 replace와 구조가 같다. 따라서 뒤에 나오는 전치사를 잘 봐야 뜻이 명확해진다.

Margarine can be substituted for butter.
마가린을 버터 대신 사용할 수 있다.
Butter can be substituted with margarine.
버터는 마가린으로 대체할 수 있다.
Instead, substitute them with optimistic thoughts. 
대신 긍정적 생각을 하세요.

 

substitute를 적고 나니 replace는 훨씬 쉬워 보인다. 글자 개수도 더 적다.
